Harvest Festival and other upcoming events

Some welcome rain after our marvellous summer has brought a late flush of roses to gardens, the apple trees as laden and there is still a huge crop of sloes to harvest along our footpaths for anyone wanting to make sloe gin or sloe jelly!  Meanwhile we will be celebrating Harvest Festival at St Peter and St Paul’s Kettlethorpe on October 12th this year – after our 9am service and Festival breakfast (with bacon butties!) on, we are having a Produce and Preserves Bring and Buy Sale from 10am to 11am in aid of the church.  All contributions (and purchases very welcome, we very much hope to see you and if you can also bring some dry foods for the Gainsborough Food Bank that would be hugely appreciated.

On November 21st at 7pm at St Peter and St Paul we have the excitement of the popular Michael Bubleˊ Tribute Act, including “Songs through the Ages” with a special Christmas finale.  Tickets (to include posh nibbles, with wine bar) £10 are selling fast but some are still available from Barbara Gilbert (gilberts666@btinternet.com).

Then watch out for our busy Christmas programme, with details to come in November Foss Focus!

The Kettlethorpe & District WI Meeting on September 16th began with much laughter as alternative words to Jerusalem on the theme of weight loss and diet were sung by a few of the ladies!  The subject of our meeting was the life of a medieval housewife. Our speaker Janet displayed several authentic replicas of both worn clothing and items found in the home.

Medieval women’s day began at 4am and involved cleaning, cooking, medicinal care, washing and more. The life expectancy of a working woman in medieval times was thirty-five to forty years. It was an interesting talk and drew attention to how much the life of a woman has evolved over the centuries. Our monthly competition winner was Gill Kyme – subject, ‘an apron’.

How old is Lincoln Cathedral? It is an amazing example of early medieval architecture, begun in 1072. On October 21st, at our next meeting, Matthew Tarling will discuss how the cathedral fabric has been saved, renewed and developed over time, continuing to serve as an awe-inspiring example of architectural design.  It should be a fascinating insight. The competition is a picture or photograph of a cathedral.
