Summer at Kettlethorpe

Time to harvest everything in the garden – and enjoy village celebrations such as our magnifcent Summer Fete on Saturday 5th July in Newton school, church and neighbouring field, from 11am to 3pm.

We have also recently enjoyed the Kettlethorpe BYO Picnic Garden Party with live music kindly hosted by Chris Fowler on June 28th, and the Organ Recital and supper at Kettlethorpe Church and Village Hall on June 13th.

It’s wonderful to see so many people turn out for these very successful community events, which also raise money to support our local school, churches and village hall. Another big success was Claire Pearce’s Coffee Morning in Newton on June 14th, which raised just over £2,700 for the Alzheimer’s Society and the Residents Comfort Fund at Swanholme Court Care Home.

Meanwhile on a glorious summer afternoon on June 17th, Kettlethorpe & District WI met up in a member’s beautiful garden in Laughterton, the home of Barbara and Kevin Gilbert. After a short business meeting under the shade of the trees, the WI ladies grouped into teams to tackle a cunning quiz put together by Caroline Scawthon. Flower and plant names had to be identified from a cryptic phrase. Try these two for example (answers below!): 1. Father’s advice to his daughter; 2. Twin girls.*

The winning team, “Confused. com” consisted of Moira, Sharon, Rosemary and Linda, who each received a small prize from Caroline, and we went on to explore the wonderful garden, with flowers, fruit and vegetables, before being fortified with cheescakes and a refreshing fruit drink. Members then voted for their favourite of a selection of blooms submitted by members, and the winner was Jill Kyme.

At July’s meeting we will be continuing the plant theme, welcoming Clare Ella who will be talking about aromatherapy and essential oils. The competition for Members is to produce a special scent bottle. If you are interested in joining us at Kettlethorpe and District WI please call Moira Watts on 01427 718737.

Meanwhile there is a new walk open around Kettlethorpe, thanks to Charlotte Hogg, with a bench to rest on at the top of the field from which you get a lovely view of the village. Updated maps of walks are available at St Peter and St Paul’s, where you can also find a guide to the trees in the churchyard.

While there it would be lovely if you could leave something for the Gainsborough food bank – we are still collecting because contributions tend to drop off in summer but the need is still great.
