Lots of sloes in the hedges and apples left on the trees to fill up all those bottles and jars left over from the plums and blackberries! And do bring any you have to spare to our Harvest Festival at 9am on Sunday October 11th, to be followed by the Bring ’n’ Buy Produce Sale (in aid of the church) of jams, chutneys and all sorts of other goodies. You’ll also get a nice hot bacon buttie after the service!
There will be a collection for the Women”s Refuge in Newark at the same service, so do bring dry goods such as pasta, rice, tinned goods (soup, tuna, beans or tomatoes) and toiletries, also toilet roll, kitchen roll baby wipes, washing powder, fabric softener or washing up liquid. All much needed as women often turn up at the Refuge with nothing.
Meanwhile the good news is that volunteers have come forward to take on the management of our fine Village Hall at Kettlethorpe – which serves Laughterton, Fenton and Torksey Lock as well. However we are still looking for someone to act as treasurer as part of the team – do please get in touch with Richard Elliott (07951 901657 or richard.elliott@kettlethorpe-pc.gov.uk) and he will explain what is involved.
September’s Kettlethorpe & District WI meeting not only reminded us of our immediate area but encouraged us to discover so much more. We explored the Lincolnshire Wolds from the Humber Estuary in the north to Spilsby in the South, guided by local historian Graham Turnbull. It was fascinating to find out about our heritage in the towns and villages of the Wolds, and to be reminded of the value of this designated area of outstanding natural beauty. The Lincolnshire Wolds continues to change, and we should remember to explore the beautiful land with its good views and open skies.
In October we look forward to two meetings. On October 13th we celebrate the 53rd birthday of our WI, which is popular as ever with 39 members. We look forward to a celebration lunch including entertainment. At our regular meeting on October 20th Sue Ricketts will be talking about nystagmus, a little understood eye condition. This should be very informative, and illustrates the variety of subjects explored at our meetings each month.
