News from Kettlethorpe, Laughterton and Fenton

Right on cue for the start of Lent, the Lent Lilies, or wild daffodils, flowered all over Kettlethorpe and the alders and hazels are dropping catkins already.  You can start a lovely spring walk from St Peter and St Paul’s Church. (where we are still collecting for the Gainsborough Food Bank).

On March 10th, at our Mother’s Day Service at 9am, there will be spring posies for all mothers (and especially grandmothers!) and treats for the children.  On Easter Sunday (March 31st) there will be Hot Cross Buns and a big Easter Egg Hunt outside the church after the 9am service.

Meanwhile the Katherine Swynford Society is advancing its plans for theKatherine Swynford Study Day at Kettlethorpe Church on Saturday May 11th.  There will be talks on John of Gaunt’s buildings, Katherine’s life at Kettlethorpe, and her royal descendants, with lunch at the Village Hall, tea and a walk around the gardens at Kettlethorpe Hall.  Tickets for this very special day, including morning coffee, lunch and tea (strictly limited in number) are £35 for KSS members or £45 for non-members, available by email (a.karyn@ntlworld.com) or by calling 07732 559 587 or 07933 353 649.

May 18th-19th the church will be open with refreshments for the Open Churches Weekend.  Guides to our church are available and an exhibition on Katherine’s life.

The WI’s meeting on February 20th began with a minute’s silence in memory of our Member Yvette Capes, and Committee Member Yvonne Smalley, who sadly passed away recently. We welcomed four guests who came with a view to joining our WI (if you are interested, please phone Moira on 01427 718737).  Our guest speaker was Rebecca Andrew, who talked about her “Culinary Disasters” from childhood to life as a working wife and mother. Most of us could relate to her experiences, especially of school Domestic Science. Rebecca went on to tell us which Recipe Books had saved her – and she brought lovely cakes and scones for us to prove it. Not a disaster amongst them!

At our AGM on March 19th, our guest speaker will be from St Barnabas, our chosen charity for 2023. Debra Yarwood, fundraising organiser for our local St Barnabas Hospice, will be presented with the money we raised for this wonderful charity.
